ACSYS Final Science Conference
St. Petersburg is the largest and northernmost of the world's
metropolitan cities. It is located in the Gulf of Finland and is spread
over 42 islands in the mouth of the Neva river delta. It is the
largest city among those located on the Baltic Sea coast, and is
seen as the ?European gateway? to Russia as well as Russia's ?visiting card?
in Europe. It is also the sight of one of the biggest Russian road junctions, where the railway, automobile, airway and waterway
routes intersect.
St. Petersburg is seen as a scientific and cultural centre of world importance. It is
included in the UNESCO catalogue of world cultural heritage sites, and the list and
description of its history consists of many volumes. In 1998 UNESCO
announced St. Petersburg to be the capital of Russian culture. The
city is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in the World,
and classically planned streets and squares, many bridges, imperial and grand architectural
and artistic ensembles form the inimitable visage of the city. St. Petersburg is
variously and poetically named "Northern Venice", "Northern
Palmira", "Northern Rome" and "The City of White Nights". (The
latter refers to a period in June when its inhabitants experience nearly
24-hours of continuous daylight.)
